1978-05-20 [[Pipino Cuevas]] w rsc 1 (15) [[Billy Backus]], Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Carlos Berrocal. On the attack from the opening bell, Cuevas (146¾) quickly got to grips with his southpaw challenger and following a hard right to the head it was apparent that Backus (146¼) was badly hurt. Although Backus stayed on his feet he was soon under pressure again and after being tagged by a left hook to the head he went down for ‘eight’, having suffered obvious damage to his right eye. Back in the fray, Backus managed to get through the round before the ring doctor advised the referee during the interval that the bout would have to be stopped. With Backus never landing a punch, Cuevas called it his easiest defence yet.
