1978-06-09 Carlos Zarate w co 4 (15) Emilio Hernandez, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Ferd Hernandez. Assuming control in the second round after a slow start, Zarate (118) got his left hook going to drop Hernandez (116½) for the mandatory ‘eight’ count. Then, after a strong third session, he carried on where he left off in the fourth, a perfect left hook-right cross dropping the challenger against the ropes where he was counted out at 2.10. Hernandez had been a late replacement for Yung-Shik Kim.

Zarate made an unsuccessful attempt to win the WBC junior featherweight belt when beaten by Wilfredo Gomez (l rsc 5 at the Roberto Clemente Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico on 28 October) before defending his title against John Mensah Kpalongo.
