1978-06-09 Larry Holmes w pts 15 Ken Norton, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Mills Lane. Scorecards: 143-142, 143-142, 142-143. Making his first defence of the title awarded him by the WBC when Leon Spinks was stripped, Norton (220) was narrowly outpointed by Holmes (209). Holmes had started well, winning the first six rounds by means of an accurate left jab, but in the seventh Norton came back strongly with heavy blows to the head and although the challenger was still boxing well the heavier punches were now coming from the latter. At the end of the 14th the judges had them dead level and while Norton continued to throw big shots almost in desperation it was Holmes, having landed several rights to the jaw without reply immediately prior to the final bell, who was given the split decision.
