1979-02-04 Alexis Arguello w co 13 (15) Alfredo Escalera, Sports Palace, Rimini, Italy - WBC. Referee: Angelo Poletti. In a return match, Escalera (129¾) failed to regain his old title as Arguello (129) once again proved too good for him. Arguello started with good left jabs and opened up a cut on Escalera’s right eye in the second with a left hook before dropping the latter in the fourth and fifth rounds with uppercuts. Escalera, now bleeding badly from both eyes, also took a standing count in the fifth. Although Escalera was handed a battering in the next couple of rounds he came back strongly in the eighth to cut Arguello over the right eye. As weight-making problems temporarily took their toll on Arguello, the former champion’s aggression saw him still there in the 13th until a short left jab-left hook dropped him for the full count after 84 seconds had elapsed.
