1979-04-17 Jim Watt w rsc 12 (15) Alfredo Pitalua, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, Scotland - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Contesting the title vacated when Roberto Duran decided to move on, Scotland’s European champion, Watt (134½), made a shaky start before settling down to box superbly well against the dangerous Pitalua (135). Countering with accurate southpaw jabs, Watt, who made the Colombian miss consistently, continuously made his rival pay with stiff lefts to the head and even when a swelling came up on his right temple in the fifth he was quickly back in control during the sixth. In the seventh a perfect left-hook counter dropped Pitalua for the compulsory ‘eight’ and in the following two sessions the latter gave it all he had in order to break through Watt’s defences. Despite a cut appearing over his right eye in the tenth, Watt was now in control and after backing up Pitalua towards the end of the 11th he didn’t waste any time in the 12th as he quickly forced his opponent to the ropes, banging in lefts and rights until the referee called a halt on the 1.52 mark.
