1979-06-16 Ernesto Espana w co 13 (15) Claude Noel, Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. A vacant title bout to decide a successor to Roberto Duran saw Espana (135) drop Noel (134½) for ‘nine’ in the opening session after he had got home with a cracking right to the jaw. Deciding that slugging it out with the heavy-handed Espana was not a good idea following that experience, Noel, countering well, got on his bike and stayed out of range for the next seven rounds until he was knocked down again in the ninth. Both men were now tiring but Espana’s superior punching power was the key and in the 13th he put Noel down again, this time for keeps after the referee counted out the latter, in a kneeling position, on the 2.38 mark.
