1979-06-30 Vito Antuofermo w pts 15 Hugo Corro, Royal Palace, Monte Carlo, Monaco - WORLD. Referee: Ernesto Magana. Scorecards: 143-142, 146-145, 145-146. In what was a difficult fight to handle, and one that seemed likely to get out of control on occasion, Antuofermo (159¼) was ultimately just too aggressive and strong for the champion to handle as he bulled his way forward. Earlier on, though, Corro (158¾) had used the jab well to open up a cut over his rival’s right eye in the third. Unable to hurt Antuofermo, he eventually he began to tire before fading after the tenth following a solid right to the jaw. Subsequently, Corro, continuously complaining about Antuofermo’s use of the head, was merely in defence mode, being almost dropped in the 15th. Even though Antuofermo had a round taken away for dangerous use of the head, it was felt at ringside that the referee would have been perfectly justified had he done likewise on at least two other occasions.

One of the conditions placed on Corro v Antuofermo was that the winner had to defend within 90 days against Marvin Hagler, who stopped Norberto Cabrera inside eight rounds on the same bill. Although the Antuofermo v Hagler fight was made for 22 September, an injured back suffered by the champion moved the fight on a couple of months or so.
