1979-07-30 [[Pipino Cuevas]] w pts 15 [[Randy Shields]], International Amphitheatre, Chicago, Illinois, USA - WBA. Referee: Luis Sulbaran. Scorecards: 71-70, 73-67, 71-70. Expected to win easily, Cuevas (146½) had a tough time of it against a challenger who used his height and reach to a maximum and also followed his battle plan to the letter. Apart from the second round when he hurt Shields (142½) with a terrific left hook, Cuevas looked lethargic by his standards, possibly due to the four postponements, and was forced to take stinging left jabs and countering rights as he tried to get to close quarters. Although Shields thought he had won the fight in the aftermath, Cuevas, who forced matters throughout when concentrating on the body without ever being able to close his man down, just about did enough to keep his belt according to press reports.
