1979-08-04 [[Ernesto Espana]] w rsc 9 (15) [[Johnny Lira]], Conrad Hilton Hotel, Chicago, Illinois, USA - WBA. Referee: Roque Nova. Prior to slipping left leads and countering to great effect, the champion was knocked down for the first time in his career when Lira (134¾) caught him with a short right to the jaw in the seventh. Shocked more than anything else, Espana (133¾) was quickly back on his feet to trade punches as Lira went in for the kill. In the eighth, boxing more cautiously and looking for openings, Espana dropped and cut Lira over the right eye before punishing him through to the bell. The ninth saw more of the same as Espana busted his rival up further and at the end of the session the referee had seen enough and pulled Lira out of the contest.
