Having survived a first-round knockdown after being caught by a solid right hook to the head, Cardona (121½) used his longer reach and straighter punching to great effect to eventually outscore his southpaw challenger. With a boring-in style, Segawa (121), cut on the left eye in the fourth, proved a dangerous foe until he ran out of gas towards the end and was floored by a right-left-right combination before the bell ended the fight.

With just two defeats from 41 contests, the aggressive Palma had beaten men of the calibre of [[Jose Casas]], [[Benicio Sosa]] and [[Nestor Jimenez]], and promised to be a tough nut to handle.
