1979-09-06 Ricardo Cardona w pts 15 Yukio Segawa, City Gym, Hachinohe, Japan - WBA. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Scorecards: 145-139, 147-140, 147-146. Having survived a first-round knockdown after being caught by a solid right hook to the head, Cardona (121½) used his longer reach and straighter punching to great effect to eventually outscore his southpaw challenger. With a boring-in style, Segawa (121), cut on the left eye in the fourth, proved a dangerous foe until he ran out of gas towards the end and was floored by a right-left-right combination before the bell ended the fight.
Rated at number six by The Ring magazine, the Argentinian and South American champion, Sergio Palma, would be Cardona’s next challenger. With just two defeats from 41 contests, the aggressive Palma had beaten men of the calibre of Jose Casas, Benicio Sosa and Nestor Jimenez, and promised to be tough nut to handle.
