1979-10-20 John Tate w pts 15 Gerrie Coetzee, Loftus Versfield Stadium, Pretoria, South Africa - WBA. Referee: Carlos Berrocal. Scorecards: 147-144, 148-145, 147-142. Fighting for the title vacated on Muhammad Ali’s retirement, after being badly stunned in the third round, Tate (240) had got into his stride by the fifth after a slow start and was working the body well with rights over the top against a strangely subdued Coetzee (222). By the tenth Coetzee was visibly tiring, having taken plenty of leather to the body, and although Tate was also tired he had enough left to box his way to victory despite being occasionally hurt by vicious rights and lefts to the head.
