1979-11-16 Alexis Arguello w rsc 7 (15) Bobby Chacon, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: John Thomas. Making his sixth defence, Arguello (129¾) was behind on all the cards when the fight was halted at the end of the seventh after the ringside doctor decided that the cut over the challenger’s right eye was too bad for him to continue. Chacon (129½) had controlled the fight with his right-hand leads being especially effective, despite picking up the cut as early as the second round, and had made light of the reach disadvantage. In the seventh Arguello finally caught up with Chacon, a short right uppercut forcing the latter to take an ‘eight’ count, and although the champion tried hard to finish the job it was left to the doctor during the interval.

Arguello’s next defence would be against the USBA featherweight champion, Ruben Castillo, even though he was still considering whether to move up a weight class. Unbeaten in 46 contests, the slick, well-schooled Castillo was stepping up a division, and while having wins over Walter Seeley, Hector Carrasquilla and Fel Clemente under his belt the great majority of his victims were barely recognised.
