1979-12-08 Pipino Cuevas w rsc 10 (15) Angel Espada, Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Terry Smith. This was the third fight between the pair and signalled the end of the challenger’s career after he was comprehensively beaten by the hard-hitting Cuevas (146) yet again. Never in with a chance from the opening bell, Espada (144½) was badly hurt in the third and fifth rounds without being decked and by the ninth, cut over the left eye, he was struggling to stay in the fight. At that point Cuevas was just walking though his defences and following a non-stop attack in the tenth, Espada went down for the mandatory ‘eight’ after being caught by heavy left-rights to the head. On getting up in a dazed state and being smashed with lefts and rights without reply, Espada was finally rescued by the referee with 57 seconds of the round remaining.
