1980-03-31 Mike Weaver w co 15 (15) John Tate, Stokely AC, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - WBA. Referee: Ernesto Magana. The opening four rounds saw the champion dominating when working well to the body, but after he was cut over the right eye Weaver (207½) came on strongly in the fifth and sixth, banging in rights and lefts to push his man back. However, Tate (232) came right back in the seventh when beginning to dominate again and in the tenth Weaver was under a lot of pressure against the ropes. Yet again the fight turned when Weaver nailed Tate with a left hook to the jaw and although the latter was hurt again by a similar punch in the 14th he somehow made it to the end of the session. Behind on points, Weaver came out firing in the 15th, throwing punch after punch at the visibly wobbling Tate, and on nearing the end of the session a tremendous left hook to the jaw sent the latter down as if hit with a poleaxe to be counted out with just 45 seconds remaining on the clock.
