1980-04-27 Alexis Arguello w rsc 4 (15) Rolando Navarrete, Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico - WBC. Roberto Ramirez. Although Navarrete (130) held his own for a couple of sessions, Arguello (130), punching with great precision and authority, was soon getting to him with stinging left jabs and hard rights. It was no surprise when Navarrete picked up damage over both eyes, and due to the nature of the deep cut on his right eye the ringside doctor instructed the referee to call a halt during the interval between the fourth and fifth rounds.
Having defended his crown eight times, Arguello relinquished the WBC version of the title in October to campaign as a lightweight and Rafael Limon and Idelfonso Bethelmy were selected to meet to decide the championship. Since losing to Arguello, Limon had lost to Bobby Chacon, but had won the vacant North American title when beating Frankie Baltazar and was still the leading contender as far as The Ring magazine were concerned. Bethelmy, who held the WBC FECARBOX title and was rated at number three by the magazine, was an awkward, spoiling type of fighter. But in 27 contests he had lost just four times and beaten Rafael Solis, Mario Martinez and Leonel Hernandez to prove his worth.
