Knocked down in the fifth round from a cracking right-left to the jaw, Vargas (107¾) somehow came out for the sixth and continued to chase down Gushiken (107¾) without much success. However, in the eighth, Vargas was rescued by the referee on the 1.43 mark after getting up from two more heavy knockdowns and being unable to defend himself.
