1980-06-11 Lupe Pintor drew 15 Eijiro Murata, Martial Arts Hall, Tokyo, Japan - WBC. Referee: Marty Denkin. Scorecards: 147-142, 144-146, 144-144. Having the longer reach, Murata (118) made life difficult for the hard-hitting champion and the contest went first one way and then the other. It was soon noticeable that Murata was throwing twice as many punches as his rival, but Pintor (118) was landing the harder ones. In the latter stages, although both men were bleeding from eye wounds it did not change the momentum and at the finish both men were extremely weary and glad it was over.
Pintor’s next defence would be against Johnny Owen, the British, Commonwealth and European champion. Tall for a bantam and possessing great stamina, Owen had lost just once in 27 contests, a defeat by Juan Francisco Rodriguez which he later avenged, and had beaten the likes of Paddy Maguire, Paul Ferreri and John Feeney.
