1980-07-12 Maurice Hope w rsc 11 (12) Rocky Mattioli, Grand Hall, Wembley, London, England - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Coming back from an operation to repair a detached retina, the champion quickly put all his problems behind him as he opened up with southpaw left crosses and solid rights to halt the rampaging Mattioli (151¾) in his tracks. Not deterred, Mattioli, his right cheekbone swollen and cut early on, continued to steam into Hope (153), only to be met by right-hand counters before having a fair amount of success in the middle rounds when landing some heavy shots. Unfortunately for Mattioli he began to tire from his exertions and by the ninth Hope, back on top, was starting to let his punches go again. Cruising through the tenth, Hope really picked it up in the 11th and after battering Mattioli with hooks and body blows the referee stepped in to rescue the latter on the 2.52 mark.
