1980-07-13 Matthew Saad Muhammad w rsc 14 (15) Yaqui Lopez, Great Gorge Playboy Hotel, McAfee, New Jersey, USA - WBC. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. In what was his fourth attempt to win a title, Lopez (173¾) made a good start and seemed to be in front coming into the ninth, having landed well with both hands and forced the champion back on several occasions. However, this stage of the fight saw Muhammad finally get going, sending in unanswered blows to head and body, and in the 13th the pressure paid off for him as the rapidly tiring Lopez began to give ground. Coming out fast for the 14th, Muhammad waded in to Lopez and after dropping him four times for mandatory ‘eight’ counts the referee had seen enough and rescued the latter with 57 seconds of the round remaining.
