1980-08-02 Thomas Hearns w rsc 2 (15) Pipino Cuevas, Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan, USA - WBA. Referee: Stan Christodoulou. It started with both men throwing the left hook at the same time and the 6’1” Hearns (146½) got there first with such force that the champion backed off. That punch set the pattern of the fight and Cuevas (146) retreated under the volume of leather coming his way. Hearns was denying Cuevas room to work by staying right on top of him and letting a vast array of punches go with blurring speed. Cuevas just about got through the opening round, but in the second he was doomed as Hearns belted him to the ropes and landed punch after punch before a vicious right to the head sent the champion crashing to the floor. Although the referee had started the count, on seeing Cuevas’ handlers trying to get to their man he stopped the fight immediately, the finish being timed at 2.39.
