1980-10-02 Larry Holmes w rtd 10 (15) Muhammad Ali, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Greene. Making an ill-advised comeback two years after retiring and 20 years after winning an Olympic gold medal, Ali (217½) was on the end of a steady beating from his former sparring partner in every round before being retired by his corner at the end of the tenth. In the ninth, Ali was in real trouble several times as Holmes (211½) landed with a whole range of heavy rights, punctuated with solid lefts, and in the tenth he just could not miss the former champion, even backing off at times. At the end of the session after a brief scuffle between his cornermen, his trainer Angelo Dundee retired Ali, who was badly swollen under both eyes, and thus brought to an end his charge’s championship career. Ali would have just one more fight, a losing ten-rounder against Trevor Berbick in December 1981, before retiring for good before becoming a victim of ‘Parkinson’s Syndrome’ in 1984.
