1980-10-02 [[Saoul Mamby]] w pts 15 [[Maurice Watkins]], Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Mills Lane. Scorecards: 146-140, 147-139, 147-141. Looking far from impressive, the champion eventually subdued the aggressive Watkins (140), who was always looking to attack with the right hand before running out of steam as the contest progressed. Right from the start Mamby (138½) appeared content to go the distance and even when Watkins picked up a cut eye in the fifth he failed to up the pace. Continually refusing to be drawn into a close quarter battle, Mamby would pick Watkins off whenever he stormed in and occasionally banged in sweeping right uppercuts, but he failed to take full advantage of the many openings that began to appear as the challenger tired and grew more desperate. The final bell came as a welcome relief to all of those who had expected something more lively.
