1980-10-25 Mike Weaver w co 13 (15) Gerrie Coetzee, Super Bowl, Sun City, South Africa - WBA. Referee: Jesus Celis. Having made a poor start, being caught by heavy rights to the head early on and badly cut by the side of the nose in the fifth, the champion had come back into contention by the eighth before running in to blistering rights to the head. Several times it seemed in that session that Coetzee (226½) was just one punch from the title, but inexplicably he failed to take full advantage and his chance had gone. By the tenth, Coetzee was in full retreat and in the 11th after the cut worsened he looked spent as Weaver (210) closed him down and worked him over. Following a mauling 12th round in which he was drained of energy it was clear that Coetzee was finished and in the 13th after being dropped by a left hook and a right to the head he was counted out on the 1.49 mark. Inactive since beating Coetzee, Weaver was ordered by the WBA to defend against James Tillis, who he was committed to meet, or risk being stripped after he had agreed to fight Gerry Cooney for $3,000,000. Taking the threat seriously, Weaver put the Cooney fight on the back burner.
