1980-11-01 Jim Watt w rsc 12 (15) Sean O'Grady, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, Scotland - WBC. Referee: Raymond Baldeyrou. This fight turned out be Watt’s toughest defence to date as O’Grady (133) gave him all sorts of problems before the inconclusive finish at 2.37 of the 12th round. Controlling most of the exchanges with the southpaw jab, Watt (135) found that luring O’Grady on to left crosses was a most effective weapon, while the latter concentrated on right hands to the head when fighting in bursts. Coming into the ninth Watt was in front, but after two solid lefts had left him gashed over the right eye he looked to be in danger of losing his title as O’Grady chased him around the ring banging in right hands. Then, following a clash of heads in the tenth the tide turned again when O’Grady was badly cut on the forehead and blood flowed into his eyes, making it difficult for him to see properly. With O’Grady’s right eye almost closed in the 12th, and with him relying purely on defence as Watt drilled in rights and lefts, the referee finally called it off after several inspections.
