1980-11-08 Hilmer Kenty w pts 15 Vilomar Fernandez, Cobo Arena, Detroit, Michigan, USA - WBA. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. Scorecards: 145-141, 146-141, 147-141. With a 13-inch reach advantage, the champion was looking to keep the tough Fernandez (134½) at bay for much of the time, but things didn’t work out as planned. Although taking a good early lead Kenty (135) never seemed to be totally in control and became caught up in a slugging match from the 11th onwards. Unable to reverse the trend, in the 13th it was apparent that Kenty had cramp in his right leg and this was the sign for Fernandez, cut over the left eye, to take over. For the next two sessions he belted Kenty all over the ring, but in the last round the latter, whose left eye was also bruised and swollen, seemed to be more mobile and despite the pair being extremely tired they punched it out to the final bell.
