1980-11-08 Hilmer Kenty w pts 15 Vilomar Fernandez, Cobo Arena, Detroit, Michigan, USA - WBA. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. Scorecards: 145-141, 146-141, 147-141. With a 13-inch reach advantage the champion was looking to keep the tough Fernandez (134½) at bay for much of the time, but things did not work out as planned. Although taking a good early lead Kenty (135) never seemed to be totally in control, becoming caught up in a slugging match from the 11th onwards. Unable to reverse the trend, in the 13th when it was apparent that Kenty had cramp in his right leg it was the sign for Fernandez, cut over the left eye, to take over for the next two sessions, belting the champion all over the ring. Coming into the last round, Kenty, whose left eye was also bruised and swollen, seemed to be more mobile as the pair punched it out to the final bell.
