1980-11-26 Maurice Hope w pts 15 Carlos Herrera, Grand Hall, Wembley, London, England - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 142-139, 145-142, 147-146. In a bitterly-fought contest, Hope (153½) retained his title against the hard-hitting Herrera (151¾) after being on the brink of defeat in the fifth, 11th and 15th rounds when his fellow southpaw had used his longer reach to crack in vicious and damaging rights and lefts. There was no doubt that Hope was badly hurt, but each time he weathered the storm to come back with solid jabs and crosses. By the 13th both men were cut over their right eyes in what had become a war of attrition and although Hope took that session the last two rounds went to Herrera, who despite coming close to seeing the champion off was unable to find the finishing blow.
