1980-11-29 Eddie Mustafa Muhammad w rsc 3 (15) Rudy Koopmans, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Moving back at speed from the opening bell, Koopmans (175) made it difficult for the champion to catch up with him and turned the contest into a non event. There had hardly been any punches landed when the two men came together towards the end of the third, but when pulling away from Muhammad (175) it could be seen that the European champion was carrying a cut left eye. At the end of the round, and following an inspection, the doctor told the referee to stop the fight and that was that. Muhammad’s next defence would be against Michael Spinks, the 1976 Olympic gold medal winner at middleweight, who gained his opportunity after 16 unbeaten pro contests and defeating men like Murray Sutherland, Yaqui Lopez, Willie Taylor and Marvin Johnson (w co 4 on 28 March 1981 at the International Resorts Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey) in what was effectively an eliminator.
