1980-12-11 [[Rafael Limon]] w rsc 15 [[lldefonso Bethelmy]], Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Contesting the title left vacant when Alexis Arguello moved up a weight class, Limon (129¼) was a clear favourite to beat Bethelmy (129¼) but struggled for almost for 15 rounds, even though the latter had been staggered by southpaw lefts in the second and eighth sessions. Both men failed to live up to expectation and there was far too little action and too much clinching before Limon finally caught up with his rival in the 15th, a barrage of punches sending Bethelmy to the canvas for ‘eight’. On getting up and indicating that he was through for the night, Bethelmy was pulled out of the fight by the referee with just 99 seconds remaining.
