1980-12-13 Wilfredo Gomez w co 3 (15) Jose Cervantes, Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami, Florida, USA - WBC. Referee: Ismael Quinones-Falu. After two fairly even rounds, Gomez (122) got down to business in the third session, firing right hands in the direction of Cervantes (120½) and finally catching him with a tremendous right cross. Smashed face down on the canvas there was no way the challenger was going to make it and he was counted out with 1.30 on the clock. Allowed time out to challenge for the WBC featherweight title against Salvador Sanchez on 21 August 1981, Gomez was granted further time to recover from an extremely hard fight. Immediately prior to the Sanchez bout it was thought that Gomez would relinquish the super-bantam crown due to difficulty making the weight, but following two non-title wins he decided to give it one more try 18 months after his previous defence.
