After two fairly even rounds, Gomez (122) got down to business in the third session, firing right hands in the direction of Cervantes (120½) and finally catching him with a tremendous right cross. Allowed time out to challenge for the WBC featherweight title against [[Salvador Sanchez]] on 21 August 1981, Gomez was granted further time to recover from an extremely hard fight. Immediately prior to the Sanchez bout it was thought that Gomez would relinquish the super-bantam crown due to difficulty making the weight, but following two non-title wins he decided to give it one more try 18 months after his previous defence.
