1981-02-14 Eusebio Pedroza w co 13 (15) Pat Ford, New City Gym, Panama City, Panama - WBA. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Having given Salvador Sanchez a tough encounter for the WBC title, Ford (125¾) was expected to run Pedroza (125¾) reasonably close as well, but things did not quite work out that way as the champion took charge from the start to wear his rival down with good body blows. Although Ford was still dangerous, Pedroza, cut by the side of the right eye, began to ease off towards the final third which allowed the man from Guyana a bit of leeway. Almost exhausted, Ford was unable to take advantage, the 11th being the beginning of the end as Pedroza stepped it up when belting away at the body. Having continued his offensive into the 13th, Pedroza finally got to Ford decisively when two left hooks to the body put the latter down to be counted out six seconds after the bell to end the round.
Rated as the number-ten junior lightweight by The Ring magazine, Carlos Pinango would be Pedroza’s next challenger. Having won 21 of 22 contests, 16 inside the distance, and beaten the highly-ranked Gustavo Salgado, Pinango’s sole defeat had come when he was stopped by Leonel Hernandez.
