5 April Jeff Chandler drew 15 Eijiro Murata, Kuramae Arena, Tokyo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Ernesto Magana. Scorecards: 145-142, 146-147, 146-146. In what was a mandatory defence, Chandler (115¼) came up against a tough handful in Murata (118), who gave him all the trouble he could handle and more. After feeling the challenger’s power in the opening session, Chandler boxed mainly on the counter, using his reach advantage to good effect and in the main nullifying Murata’s aggression. Both men were cut over their right eyes and showed the signs of battle in what was a closely contested bout, Chandler getting a share of the verdict after producing his best work in the closing stages as Murata tired.
