1981-04-12 Sean O'Grady w pts 15 Hilmer Kenty, Bally’s Park Place Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Larry Hazzard. Scorecards: 146-139, 146-138, 147-137. Starting aggressively and punching solidly to the body, O’Grady (133) sent the champion sprawling in the second after catching him with a right to the jaw just before the round ended. Although O’Grady was going well he was hampered by a cut over the left eye in the fifth following a clash of heads before Kenty (134½) received a cut over his right eye in the seventh. Subsequently, the two fought as if their lives depended on it and while Kenty put in some classy work it was O’Grady who was the most effective, his harder punches being decisive.

O'Grady forfeited WBA recognition in August following a contractual dispute. In an effort to support O’Grady’s claim to the title, a body called the World Athletic Association promoted a match between him and Andy Ganigan at the Convention Centre, Little Rock, Arkansas on 31 October. Unfortunately for O’Grady, Ganigan had not read the script and scored a second-round kayo, a result that got him a match against the WBC titleholder, Alexis Arguello.
