1981-04-22 Chul-Ho Kim w pts 15 Jiro Watanabe, Changchung Gym, Seoul, South Korea - WBC. Referee: Ray Solis. Scorecards: 143-142, 147-146, 148-146. In a very close fight, the hard-punching southpaw, Watanabe (114½), who had never been beyond ten rounds, gave Kim (114¼) a hard time and it was only when he tired in the last third that the champion came on strong to pick up the win. Once the WBA had decided to recognise the 115lbs weight class early in 1981 they set up two semi-final legs and, following wins by Gustavo Ballas over Jackal Maruyama (w rsc 11 at Luna Park Stadium, Buenos Aires, Argentina on 9 May 1981) and Sok-Chul Bae over Rafael Pedroza (w pts 12 at the Munhwa Gym, Seoul, South Korea on 7 June), the pair were matched to decide their version of the title.
