1981-04-24 Hilario Zapata w pts 15 Rudy Crawford, Cow Palace, San Francisco, California, USA - WBC. Referee: Rudy Jordan. Scorecards: 147-137, 148-137, 149-136. Outclassed at every turn, Crawford (107¼) tried his hardest but to no avail. After being knocked down in the sixth the challenger came back to stun Zapata (107¾), but was soon back under pressure and being speared by punches from every conceivable angle until the final bell.

Next man up for Zapata would be German Torres, the Mexican champion. With 33 wins in 37 fights, Torres, who had beaten Lupe Madera (twice), Candido Tellez and Amado Ursua, was seen as a worthy opponent for the hard-hitting Zapata.
