1981-04-25 Thomas Hearns w rsc 12 (15) Randy Shields, Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum, Phoenix, Arizona, USA - WBA. Referee: Bobby Ferrera. Three inches shorter than the champion, the gritty Shields (146½) gave it his best shot, but took a hammering in virtually every round as Hearns (146) let the punches go. Several times Shields was sent back on his heels as crashing rights to the jaw hit the target and left jabs homed in on him, but he continued gallantly even if the task was a hopeless one. By the ninth, Shields was cut over both eyes and after taking a heavy beating on the ropes near the end of the 12th the referee pulled him out following a discussion with the ringside doctor.
