1981-05-24 [[Wilfred Benitez]] w co 12 (15) [[Maurice Hope]], Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Greene. Taking the fight to the challenger with stiff southpaw jabs, Hope (153½) made a reasonable start but before too long he was being undone by powerful body shots that began to weaken him. By the fifth Benitez (153¼) was well on top, and in the sixth he nearly had Hope over from a battery of lightning-quick punches delivered from both hands. Somehow Hope kept plugging away, but he was fighting a losing battle, and at the end of the tenth he was sent down for ‘four’ by a right to the head. Having cruised through the 11th Benitez moved up a gear in the 12th, and after setting Hope up with body blows a long right to the jaw sent the latter crashing to be counted out on the 1.56 mark.
