1981-09-12 Claude Noel w pts 15 Rodolfo Gonzalez, Bally’s Park Place Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Vincent Rainone. Scorecards: 145-140, 144-141, 145-141. Contesting the title that became vacant after Sean O'Grady was stripped, Gonzalez (134½), with 16 knockouts in 20 fights, was expected to become the new champion at the expense of the 33-year-old Noel (134). That was not how it worked out though. Using all his experience, Noel continuously backed Gonzalez to the ropes where he would feint with the right before smashing in left hooks. Gonzalez only got into the fight after Noel had been thumbed in the left eye during the fifth and cut over the right in the seventh, but the latter soon got his boxing together again to ride out the storm. With Gonzalez coming on strong over the last three sessions as his rival tired it created a lot of excitement and although the Mexican smashed in some heavy punches it was not nearly enough to overturn the deficit.
