1981-10-03 Mike Weaver w pts 15 James Tillis, Horizon Arena, Rosemont, Illinois, USA - WBA. Referee: Stan Christodoulou. Scorecards: 147-142, 145-143, 146-142. Making a good start, using the jab well, Tillis (209) looked to be a coming champion early on as Weaver (215) found it difficult to get going, often looking slow and lethargic. However, by the sixth Tillis began to slow and Weaver came into it more, nailing his challenger with hard left-rights. It was clear that Tillis was fast tiring and in the tenth he was backing off as Weaver began to let the punches go. Regardless, Tillis was still in the fight and in the 12th he had Weaver on the verge of being knocked out after bombing him with a short right. Both men were staggered in the 14th, but from thereon in it was all Weaver and Tillis appeared luck to make it to the final bell.

Once again inactive, this time it was not entirely Weaver’s fault, as a scheduled defence against Randall Cobb was twice postponed due to first Weaver and then Cobb being injured. The fight was eventually cancelled when Weaver was ordered by the WBA to make a defence against the number-one challenger, Michael Dokes.
