1981-11-21 [[Alexis Arguello]] w co 7 (15) [[Roberto Elizondo]], Showboat Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Joey Curtis. For the opening three rounds the challenger gave Arguello (135) plenty to think about as he worked the body and traded punches without a thought, but in the fourth it was a different story after he was sent to the floor from a flurry of blows for the first time in his career. It was in the fifth that Arguello began to work well with the left hook and right cross and while the game Elizondo (133¾) continued to throw punches, mainly in desperation, the end was in sight. Unleashing a cracking right to the head, Arguello put Elizondo down for the mandatory ‘eight’ in the seventh and when the latter was eventually given the command to box on he was immediately set upon. This was Arguello at his best and a left to the body followed by a right uppercut sent Elizondo down to be counted out seven seconds after the round had ended.
