1981-12-20 Saoul Mamby w pts 15 Obisia Nwankpa, National Stadium, Lagos, Nigeria - WBC. Referee: Harry Gibbs. Scorecards: 144-143, 145-143, 145-146. Taking the fight to the champion, Nwankpa (138¼) made a good start and for the first six rounds he was in with a shout as he went after an opponent who seemed happy to stay out of trouble. However, all that changed in the seventh when Mamby (139¼), deciding that he’d done enough defensive work, cut loose with lefts and rights to the head to floor the Commonwealth champion. Although Nwankpa rallied somewhat during the next few rounds it was Mamby, putting his punches together well, who finished the stronger of the pair to just about warrant the split decision in his favour.
