1982-01-30 [[Arturo Frias]] w tdec 9 (15) [[Ernesto Espana]], Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Hiroyuki Tezaki. Scorecards: 79-76, 79-77, 80-76. Making his first defence following his shock victory over [[Claude Noel]], the new champion avenged his only defeat on beating Espana (135) by a technical decision after 26 seconds of the ninth round had elapsed. Cut over the left eye in the third, by that time Frias (135) was making all the running and by the fifth Espana was being driven round the ring after his hardest shots had failed to make a dent on the former. Although Frias was rocked by a left hook to the jaw in the sixth he continued his advance into the ninth before the fight was terminated when he was badly cut under the left eye following a clash of heads. When the fight went to the cards all three judges had Frias ahead and he was declared the winner.
