1982-01-30 [[Wilfred Benitez]] w pts 15 [[Roberto Duran]], Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Greene. Scorecards: 145-141, 143-142, 144-141. In what was an interesting fight rather than an explosive one, the champion appeared to beat Duran (152½) by a bigger margin than what was spelt out on the scorecards. Most sessions saw the much bigger, stronger Benitez (152¼) commanding the centre of the ring and countering Duran, who lacked the hand speed of previous years. Although Duran gave it one last fling in the 15th he was unable to punish Benitez, who coolly picked him off as he charged in, and even when they went toe-to-toe through to the final bell the former 135 and 147lbs champion was unable to make a dent. There were no knockdowns and both men were cut over the left eye, Duran in the seventh and Benitez in the 12th.
