1982-02-15 Sugar Ray Leonard w rsc 3 (15) Bruce Finch, Centennial Coliseum, Reno, Nevada, USA - WORLD. Referee: Mills Lane. Although he started promisingly, after Finch (145¼) was dropped for ‘nine’ by the champion in the second, when blasted by a left hook-right to the head, the end appeared ominous, especially when he fell down immediately afterwards. Seemingly distressed, but up at ‘eight’, Finch somehow struggled through the round. Coming out for the third, Finch tried to get himself going, but he was taking punches a plenty and a crunching left uppercut from Leonard (146) dropped him. Having lurched to his feet in an unstable condition the referee took a good look at Finch before deciding that he was not fit to continue and stopped the bout on the 1.50 mark.
Towards the end of the year, the WBC announced that, as from 1 January 1983, all world title bouts held under their banner would be contested over 12 rounds.
Leonard relinquished the title on announcing his retirement in November and the WBA lined up Donald Curry (who had won a final eliminator on points over 12 rounds against Marlon Starling on 23 October at the Convention Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey) to fight Jun-Suk Hwang for their version of the championship. Meanwhile, the WBC set up Colin Jones and Milton McCrory to contest their title, despite the European champion initially being lined up to meet Mauricio Bravo in a final eliminator.
