1982-03-07 Marvin Hagler w rsc 1 (15) Caveman Lee, Bally’s Park Place Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WORLD. Referee: Larry Hazzard. Making a very fast start, the champion was soon looking to put the quietus on Lee (159½) and having knocked his rival’s head back with solid punches a right hook sent him down. Up at the mandatory ‘eight’ count on shaky legs Lee appeared to be at the mercy of Hagler (158), who tore across the ring to finish the job. Having rained in punches, mainly to the head, two cracking right hooks left Lee helpless on the ropes and just when Hagler was looking to finish the job the referee did it for him when calling a halt after just 67 seconds of action. Following a successful defence, Hagler looked to hook up with Thomas Hearns, the former WBA welterweight champion, and a title meeting was projected for 24 May before being called off in mid June after the fighters were unable to agree the venue. Almost immediately, Hagler signed for a defence against Fully Obelmejias in Italy at the end of July, which was undone within days after the champion suffered a broken rib in training. Bearing in mind that the injury would take two or three months to heal, both parties agreed to an early October date.
