1982-04-11 Michael Spinks w rsc 8 (15) Murray Sutherland, Playboy Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Zack Clayton. For several rounds Sutherland (173¾) made a good showing, but after hurting the champion with a right to the jaw in the sixth the pattern of the fight changed. It seemed to be the wake-up call that Spinks needed, and when the round ended Sutherland was under a big attack from both hands. From then on, with Spinks (172) knowing that he had Sutherland where he wanted him, he forced a standing count in the eighth when the Scots-born challenger was sent spinning by a heavy right to the head. Now in a bad way, Sutherland was dropped twice more before the referee rescued him on the 1.24 mark.
