1982-04-26 Davey Moore w co 5 (15) Charlie Weir, Ellis Park Rugby Ground, Johannesburg, South Africa - WBA. Referee: Luis Sulbaran. Although shading the opening round the challenger was found wanting early in the second when Moore (152) opened up quickly to drop him twice with rights to the head. Thereafter, it was all one way as Moore went about his business, dropping Weir (151¾) once in the third and twice in the fourth before finishing the South African off in the next session. Charging out for the fifth, when Moore, who had only made the weight after three attempts, found Weir with a left to the body followed by a right to the jaw the latter was counted out after 35 seconds.
Earlier, Tony Ayala had won an injunction in New Jersey on the grounds that he was the leading available challenger and that the WBA had no right to allow Moore v Weir to go ahead as a championship contest. However, after the WBA immediately applied for a stay in a Pennsylvanian court when this was granted the fight went ahead as initially planned.
That had not been the only wrangle, as the WBA had already given assurances to Ayub Kalule that he would be facing the winner within 60 days, having overlooked the ruling that if a champion loses his title to anyone but the official leading contender the new champion’s first defence must be against the leading available contender.
