1982-06-27 S. T. Gordon w rsc 2 (15) Carlos De Leon, Front Row Theatre, Cleveland, Ohio, USA - WBC. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Following a fairly even opening round, when the champion was caught by a big right to the jaw after taking the fight to Gordon (189), a barrage of blows put him on the floor. Forced to take the mandatory ‘eight’ count it was soon clear that De Leon (187) was still dazed, and after being backed into a corner and taking a steady shellacking from both hands the referee stopped the contest with nine seconds of the session remaining.

In the aftermath, the winner claimed he was unaware until shortly before the fight that the WBC had increased the weight-class limit from 190 to 195lbs. He went on to say that had he known he would have obviously come in heavier.

Later in the year, the WBA announced that all world title bouts held under their auspices would be contested over 12 rounds from 1 January 1983.
